H&H GC Completes Landmark Newark School Renovation
23 October 2026

Hughes & Hughes General Contracting is proud to announce the on-schedule and within-budget completion of the 120,000-square-foot historic modernization program for Newark High School of Architecture & Design. Fully executing comprehensive structural reinforcement, high-efficiency system overhauls, and heritage facade preservation, the landmark project stands ready to serve future generations of young creators.
A Historic Building Reimagined
First constructed in 1912, the majestic brick structure required a thorough structural modernization to meet contemporary safety, mechanical, and learning standards. H&H GC spearheaded complete electrical service overhauls, integrated centralized green HVAC climate loops, enhanced universal ADA accessibility systems, and developed state-of-the-art computer and digital science fabrication labs.
Navigating Historic Preservation Requirements
Working in close harmony with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO), our project engineers and masonry experts successfully preserved and repaired original brick detailing, grand arched entry frames, and copper trims. Every material selection underwent rigorous sample-matching to maintain pure structural cohesion with the historic Tri-State district style guidelines.
Phased Construction Around Active School
To ensure safety and continuous instructional progress, construction was strategically completed over off-hours, weekend shifts, and summer breaks. Our logistics team maintained a zero-incident jobsite threshold while actively routing material supply channels clear of student entry points, proving our deep commitment to community integration and absolute safety performance.
Project Impact
The newly upgraded Newark High School of Architecture & Design successfully balances classic exterior heritage with a high-performance modern learning environment. From day-one layouts to final trim detailing, H&H is honored to deliver lasting community landmarks that inspire our industry's next creative thinkers.
